Fair Pensions for Women. Letter to Editors from Cllr Heather Kidd

September 22, 2017 5:25 PM

Dear Editor

There are many women living in Shropshire born on or after 6th April 1951 who will not qualify for their pensions at the age of 60. The problem is that the Government changed their pension age in 1995 but failed to tell them until it was too late to upgrade their pensions. Many are now facing considerable hardship.

The Government does admit that the Department of Work and Pensions failed to notify people properly.

Imagine how shocked I was to find that the Conservatives at Shropshire Council voted against my motion to the last full Council asking them to write to the Government about making amends for this mistake! They could not even bring themselves to even write a letter!

Fairness to our tax payer women who have supported family - both parents, children and grandchildren - should be a basic right. I can only think the Peter Nutting, Leader of Shropshire Council, lives in a more affluent world than many of these women in Shropshire. The real world is a much harder place than he realises.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Kidd
